Drywall finish levels
How smooth should your walls be?
The drywall trade grades finishing from Level 0 to Level 5. Pick a level to see what it means. We will recommend the right one for your job at the estimate.
Level 1
Tape set in joint compound. Ridges and tool marks are left as they are.
- Good for
- Attics, above ceilings and other spaces no one sees.
Level 2
Tape embedded and wiped down, with one coat over screws and corner bead.
- Good for
- Garages, storage rooms and walls that will get tile.
Level 3
Tape plus one more coat on the joints, and two coats on screws.
- Good for
- Walls that will get a medium or heavy texture.
Level 4 Most homes
Tape plus two more coats on the joints and three on screws, sanded smooth.
- Good for
- Flat and eggshell paint, light texture and wallpaper.
Level 5 Smoothest
Everything in Level 4, plus a thin skim coat over the entire surface.
- Good for
- Satin or gloss paint, dark colors and walls hit by low-angle sunlight.

Most living spaces get a Level 4 finish. Walls with glossy paint, dark colors or strong side lighting look best at Level 5. Garages are often finished to Level 2 or 3. We will recommend the right level at your estimate.
